Old style felt was ten to fifteen years if you were lucky. A well fitted EPDM or GRP roof is a different class: the materials themselves are rated for decades. The weak point is always the workmanship at edges and outlets, which is exactly where we take the most care.
Standing water, called ponding, ages any flat roof faster: it strains the membrane, freezes in winter and finds any weak seam. Sometimes the fix is as simple as correcting the falls with firring or a tapered board when the roof is recovered. If your roof ponds, it is worth a look before it starts leaking.
